Demystifying the Garbage Disposal to Keep Your Kitchen Smelling Fresh

  |     |   Cleaning

sinkYou might have the cleanest of all the apartments in Edgewater, New Jersey, and yet you can still find yourself asking, "What is that smell in the kitchen?" It might actually be your garbage disposal. This handy tool in your kitchen is often overlooked when people clean their apartments, and a lot of people don't know how to clean the inside of it. Not to worry, we've got you covered! But before we say anything else, this word of caution is necessary: Never stick your hand in the garbage disposal.

How to Clean Your Apartment's Garbage Disposal

  • Scrub Around the Drain: You can scrub around the outside of the drain with a sponge or a regular dishcloth. To start the process of cleaning inside the disposal, use a throwaway toothbrush. This won't get the entire garbage disposal clean, but it will allow you to scrub the gunk off near the top of it.
  • Ice and Salt: This is a very noisy task, so you might want to let your next-door neighbor know what's happening before you do it. First, fill the disposal with a large cup of small ice cubes (full-size ice cubes take forever to grind up, so buy a bag of smaller cubes if needed). Then pour about a half cup of sea salt, kosher salt or rock salt in on top of the ice. You want to use a grainy salt with larger granules for this — regular table salt granules are too small. Turn on the disposal until all of the ice runs through the grinder. We told you this would be noisy, right? The salt and ice will work to scrape off any built-up residue inside the disposal. Run hot water through it after the job is done.
  • Citrus Peels: Once the disposal is cleaned, break some citrus peels (lemon, orange or grapefruit) up into small pieces. Run those through the disposal to give it a nice citrus scent. Then, flush the disposal further by running hot water through it for a minute.

Hopefully, these tips will help to eliminate that "mystery odor" in the kitchen and keep your apartment smelling fresh.
