What’s the best thing about fall? It just might be the fact that it’s the beginning of hot chocolate season! However, you don’t have to settle for ordinary during the cold weather months from your Edgewater apartment. Check out these five fun, creative, and delicious takes on the traditional hot chocolate recipe.

1. Cookies and Cream

This one is really easy and worth a little extra effort; simply make your favorite hot chocolate mix, top with whipped cream, then add crushed Oreos over the top. (Hint: For best results, crush the cookies very finely and evenly.) For an even richer-tasting hot chocolate, add a couple tablespoons of sweetened, condensed milk to your beverage while it is heating.

2. Candy Cane Hot Chocolate

This minty take on hot cocoa is sure to be a hit around the holidays. Add ¼ tsp. mint extract to your regular hot chocolate recipe. If you wish, add whipped cream and top with finely crushed Thin Mint cookies.

3. S’Mores Hot Cocoa

Marshmallows are a natural companion to hot chocolate, so it’s no surprise this campfire favorite works so well with the drink. For this recipe, toast a couple marshmallows for each mug over your stove burner. Crush graham crackers very finely; after dipping the rim of each mug in honey, coat them in the crushed graham crackers. Make hot chocolate using semi-sweet chocolate, then top with the toasted marshmallows.

4. Peanut Butter Cup

While heating your favorite hot chocolate recipe, add a tablespoon of peanut butter to it; stir until completely melted and smooth.

5. Caramel Hot Chocolate

Melt three or four caramel candies into your hot chocolate while it is heating. Stir well until completely blended. Top with whipped cream, and drizzle more melted caramel over the top. (Optional: Sprinkle your finished drink with finely grated chocolate.)

While you can’t go wrong with hot chocolate made the traditional way on a cold afternoon, if you’re craving something different, let these gourmet hot chocolate recipes inspire you.
