National Pizza Day is here, which means you have the best possible excuse to eat some pizza – as if anyone needs an excuse! But while you may have a favorite place or two here in Edgewater or the surrounding area, the national holiday gives you the opportunity to justify going further in your quest for the perfect pie. It’s National Pizza Day, and you deserve to celebrate it in the best pizza parlor you can find, which means heading to the City.
PIZZERIAS WORTHY OF NATIONAL PIZZA DAY
1. LOMBARDI’S (32 SPRING STREET)
If there was ever a day to visit the oldest pizzeria in New York, it’s National Pizza Day. Lombardi’s has been selling pies since 1905, and you can tell how long it’s been in business by the decor. The red and white checkered tables and the decorations on the walls hail from an earlier time, as does the pizza. Lombardi’s claims to be responsible for establishing New York style pizza. When you get your pie, you will notice a slightly thicker crust than you would expect, but it is a difference you will appreciate. Lombardi’s is an institution for good reason. Order a pie (no slices here) and enjoy!
2. NY PIZZA SUPREME (413 8TH AVENUE)
At NY Pizza Supreme you will find an opposite experience to the much older Lombardi’s – but just as good in its own right. Here you can buy slices, and there is no emphasis on decor or comfort. NY Pizza Supreme is all about the pizza, which is commendable. The sauce here is the real star, so start off with a simple margarita so you can taste it, before you move on to slices with toppings.
3. JOHN’S PIZZERIA OF BLEECKER STREET (278 BLEECKER STREET)
Another pizzeria that only sells whole pies, John’s features a nice, welcoming atmosphere that you expect from a well-established pizzeria. The pizza here is of the Neapolitan variety, which is noticeably different than the standard New York style – but just as good, and worth experiencing. Cooked in a brick oven, these pizzas have been satisfying New Yorkers since 1929.
