Sweet Potatoes

3 Appetizers Perfect for Thanksgiving

Sweet PotatoesSome people think of the traditional feast served for Thanksgiving, and figure it doesn’t make sense to eat anything beforehand since there will be so much on the dinner table. This is poor planning, though, and the holiday pro knows that appetizers are always the way to go. It’s the best way to avoid grumpy people by the time everyone is ready to sit down at the table. Delicious appetizers will be sure to put everyone in a great mood before they even come to the table. Here are three of our favorites:

Three of the Best Thanksgiving Appetizers

  1. Sausage-Stuffed Mushrooms: These perfectly capture some of our favorite Thanksgiving flavors, and wrap them up in a package that is perfect for finger food, perhaps while watching the game on TV. Simple to make, this Ina Garten recipe is sure to lend a great deal of sophistication to your pre-feast festivities.
  2. Savory Pumpkin Hummus: You’re sure to have several guests who will appreciate a healthy choice of appetizer. And those who aren’t concerned with health on Thanksgiving will just appreciate how delicious it is. Everyone loves pumpkin every day in fall, but it’s especially appropriate for Thanksgiving Day. Pumpkin is so often relegated to sweet pies, some people don’t even realize how great it can be as a savory dish.
  3. Sweet Potato Rounds: Whether your home is filled with football fans or your guests are not sports people, you can count it as a pretty good bet that everyone is a fan of something: nachos! That’s hardly a traditional Thanksgiving food, but these transformed sweet potatoes capture all that’s delicious about nachos and imbue it with the spirit of Thanksgiving thanks to the flavor and bright orange color of the sweet potato base. If you want more of a nod to the holiday, consider using a cranberry relish instead of the pesto or salsa.

Our Edgewater apartments are the perfect place to relax after enjoying the Macy’s Day Parade and to snack on appetizers and then a full holiday spread. Blankets on Table

How to Make Your Apartment Nice and Cozy for Fall

Blankets on TableEven though we’ve been enjoying an unseasonably warm start to the fall season here at Infinity Edgewater, the cold months are coming and that means it’s time to switch up your apartment decor. Whether you love decorating for the holidays or you simply want to make your space feel more comfortable and inviting, fall is the perfect time of year to get your creative juices flowing.

Top 5 Ways to Make Your Apartment More Cozy for Fall

1. Warm Up With a Throw

A cozy throw blanket or two will instantly make your apartment look and feel like you’re ready to take on the cold. Bold, nubby knits are perfect for a night in with a great movie and even better for snuggling up with friends and family.

2. Pile on the Pillows

Whether you feel like getting lost for an afternoon on the couch or you simply want to feel snug in your bed, adding extra pillows to your favorite recharging spots is always a great idea. Look for pillows that have lots of texture and go for great pieces of all shapes and sizes.

3. Pull Out Your Quilts

Quilts are an easy way to add additional warmth to your bed but they can look great in other rooms as well. Use them to freshen up your cozy fall decor in your living room, hanging in your entryway or even on a table.

4. Have Fun With Fabric

Bare tabletops are hassle-free and great for the summer months but using fabric during the fall just feels more inviting. Cover up your favorite tables with seasonal runners for a fun, functional and cozy change.

5. Create a Reading Nook

When the weather outside starts to get a little more frightful, it’s the perfect opportunity to stay in and catch up on your reading list. Create a comfy reading nook this fall in any room with a few oversize throw pillows, a warm blanket and a reading lamp.

Man Doing Push-Ups

5 Living Room Exercises

Man Doing Push-UpsWhen the weather starts to cool down and the sun starts to set at 4:30 p.m., many of us store our workout gear away for the long months ahead. But exercise isn’t just for that bikini or swim trunks you spent money on—it’s a commitment you make to yourself every season. If you don’t have time to make it to the fitness center, keep these living room exercises in mind. They’re never going to be as exciting as a run outdoors, but you won’t regret keeping up your fitness plan with these suggestions.

Wall Sit

Don’t have a chair in your living room? No problem! Let yourself become your own chair when you sit up straight using the wall as support. This exercise may be brutal, but it’s one of the best ways to strengthen your legs and core.

Instead of targeting one group of muscles with the triceps dip or bicep curl, target your entire upper body and arms with push-ups. Tough as they may be, they’re space savers and multi-taskers.

Jumping Jacks

Skipping rope burns a lot of calories, but that rope is just as likely to take out a light fixture as it is to make you fit. Jumping jacks can be done while you’re watching television, and they’re vigorous enough cardio that you might not have to pay as much for heating bills.

For the best in core work, planks are the way to go. A stronger core means better balance and less belly fat. It’s also a good way to strengthen your back muscles, hamstrings, and shoulders.

Squats are good for getting the muscles of your lower half to spring back to life, and they’re beloved by people who love wearing nicely fitted jeans in the winter. If you really want a workout that kills belly fat, try punisher squats where you hold the dip for 30 seconds or more.

All of our apartments in Edgewater will give you the space you need to do these living room exercises. If you’re also looking to get a little more luxury in your life this year, then call Infinity Edgewater. Our apartments are perfect for those who are always striving to improve themselves. We look forward to speaking with you!

With all that Edgewater, NJ has to offer, relaxing and enjoying your home can often be the perfect way to end a busy day at the office. Infusing the environment with a blend of your favorite essential oils will not only act as an air freshener to stimulate the senses, but some are also natural air purifiers. Lemongrass, eucalyptus, Frankincense and spike lavender can be blended or used individually in an oil diffuser to clean the air in your home.

Essential oils are the concentrated essence of plants, roots, flowers and bark. The same natural remedies that were used in ancient times for healing and health have withstood the test of time – offering new and beneficial ways to take advantage of nature’s own remedies for modern concerns.

4 Ways to Use Essential Oils at Home

All-Natural Carpet Deodorizer

Mix 5-6 drops of orange or lavender essential oil with 1 cup of baking soda. After mixing well, add to a jar with a perforated lid, such as an empty spice jar or dried Parmesan cheese canister. Sprinkle on your carpet, then vacuum after allowing the deodorizer to sit for 15-20 minutes. The baking soda acts to absorb and neutralize odors, while the essential oils remain to deodorize and freshen your carpet naturally.

Natural Cleaning Products

Essential oils are a safe alternative to harsh chemicals. Explore these recipes for tea tree, lemon, cinnamon and many other essential oils that are blended with other natural ingredients to create insect repellent, degreaser, laundry soap, and household surface cleaners.

Peppermint tempers halitosis, clove oil is microbial which kills bacteria, lavender relieves blisters and spearmint is a strong antiseptic. If you’re looking for natural treatments, essential oils are the way to go.

Working From Home on a Laptop

How to Stay Focused When Working From Home

Working From Home on a LaptopWorking from home is a trend that is steadily increasing with many companies. Whether you already work from home or you are facing the possibility of working from home, it is important to ensure you can focus. Working at your place of employment and working from home are very different. Many people find it difficult to remain focused while at home. Use these tips to make sure you can stay focused.

How to Stay Focused When Working From Home

Create a Separate Space for Your Work

You do not want to work just anywhere when you are at home. You want a dedicated space for your work. Make sure you create a desk space where you can completely focus on the job at hand. You do not want to use this space for anything other than your work so do your best not to make it a space where other things happen, such as reading for fun or some other activity.

Get Rid of Distractions

Once you have a place where you can focus, you want to make sure that you do not have any distractions. That means that you should not have a TV anywhere near your workspace. Get rid of all distractions from the area. If possible, you should try to close the area off from those things. If you can use a room for work and close the door, you will have the most luck but if that is not possible, find another way to “close” the area off from all distractions.

Keep the Noise Down

Along with getting rid of any distractions, you also want to make sure that you do not have any excess noise. If there are other people that are staying in your home while you are working, then you should make sure that you can eliminate the noise. Whether you do this with earplugs or by enforcing a rule of no loud noise in your home during work hours, as long as it is quiet, you can get a lot of work done.

Working from home is a great luxury as long as you can continue to get the work done. If you are looking for a great place to work and live in, be sure to check out our Edgewater apartments.

Green Apples

Sip on These Spiked Apple Cider Recipes

Green ApplesApple cider makes a tasty beverage, hot or cold. Either way, it’s a fall tradition. Here are three recipes for our Infinity residents in Edgewater, NJ looking to add a little kick to their cider.

Hot Spiked Apple Cider

A spin on the classic hot presentation, this spiked recipe is perfect for parties because it’s easy to keep warm and you can make significant quantities. First, you’ll need to gather the following ingredients: 1 quart of water, 3 spiced tea bags (orange or lemon), ½ cup of brown sugar, 2 cups of apple cider, 1 ½ cups of white rum, 10 cinnamon sticks, and 3 teaspoons of butter.

Bring the water to boil in a large pan. Drop in the tea bags and immediately remove from the heat. Cover and let it sit for about five minutes. Spoon out the tea bags and squeeze water back into the mixture. Stir in the remainder of the ingredients, except cinnamon sticks and butter.

Reheat to the appropriate temperature. Place a ½ teaspoon of butter in each mug and pour over it. Garnish with cinnamon sticks.

There are a couple of nice things about this recipe. You can double or triple its volume for parties. Also, the spiked cider can be kept hot in a simple coffee warmer or suitable device. You can also play around with flavored rums. Cheers!

Cold Spiked Apple Cider Punch

They say that “some like it hot,” but others like a chilled beverage. Cider goes both ways and this spiked punch recipe will be a cocktail party hit. Gather the following necessary ingredients. One half gallon of apple cider, 1 cup of dark rum, 1 cup of cinnamon schnapps, 2 Granny Smith apples, and 1 lemon.

Pour the cider, rum and schnapps into a large punch bowl. Peel, slice and add the apple chunks. Squeeze all the lemon juice you can muster into the punch bowl. Ladle the mix into glasses filled with ice and garnish with maraschino cherries. Enjoy!

Apple Cider Bourbon Slushy

This slushy recipe will make you feel like you’re on a tropical beach in autumn. Put ice in a blender. Add 2 ounces of apple flavored bourbon, 1 ounce of caramel vodka and 1 cup of apple cider. Blend until it reaches frozen drink consistency. If it’s a tad thin, just add more ice. Pour a taste into a glass and sip. Add cider to take the edge off or add a splash of liquor to crank it up. Pour into a glass and insert straw and colorful umbrella. Bottoms up!

We hope our Infinity community members enjoy these spiked apple cider suggestions. If you or a friend would like more information about our Edgewater apartments, call us today.

Backpack for Travel

Packing Hacks That Will Help You Breeze Through TSA

Backpack for TravelNobody likes going through airport security. It is a hassle, unpleasant and inconvenient. But there are ways to make the process smoother. The better you are at meeting the security guidelines of the TSA, and knowing how to adapt to the system, the quicker you can get through the checkpoint and onto the plane.

Packing and Prepping for Airport Security

1. Read the Current Guidelines Before You Pack

The TSA guidelines don’t change that often, but they do change. Before you throw your first item into your carry-on, make a quick check online for the current rules. Once you know what you can and can’t do, you can pack accordingly.

2. Remember the 3-1-1 Rule

The 3-1-1 rule refers to the current standard set by the TSA for bringing liquids, gels, pastes, etc., in your carry-on. You are allowed a one-quart bag filled with 3.4 oz. containers of your toiletries. You can buy kits made for carry-on use which include a clear quart bag and clear containers of 3.4 oz.

3. Be Ready to Take Your Shoes Off

You will be required to take your shoes off and put them through the x-ray machine. Savvy travelers are aware of this and wear shoes that make adhering to the rule easy. Ideally, slip-on shoes are best. You can wear shoes with socks if you don’t want your bare feet on the floor, or you can wear sandals if the weather permits and you don’t mind walking on the airport floor barefoot for a little bit.

4. Take Off All Metal Before You Get to the Scanner

Know what metal you are wearing as you enter the airport, and be prepared to remove all of it as you wait in line to go through the scanner. You can stuff your belt, jewelry, watch, etc., into your bag before you send it through the x-ray.

5. Be Patient and Respectful

It is normal to be frustrated by the security process, but showing your frustration could make everything take longer. No matter how hard it might be, try to keep your cool and be polite to avoid any unnecessary hassle from TSA agents.

Indoor Plants

Suitable Indoor Plants That Breathe Life Into Your Apartment

Indoor PlantsAdding indoor plants to your Edgewater apartment not only brightens your interior but can also improve your home’s indoor air quality. Choose indoor plants that add color, shape and texture to your décor and you’ll enjoy living focal points with a much longer lifespan than fresh cut flowers. Location is key when choosing indoor plants suitable for your apartment because each plant has unique light requirements. Since your living room offers various light levels, most plants do well here. When picking plants for your bedroom or bathroom, however, specific types of plants make better choices.

Location is key when choosing indoor plants suitable for your apartment because each plant has unique light requirements. Since your living room offers various light levels, most plants do well here. When picking plants for your bedroom or bathroom, however, specific types of plants make better choices.

Bedroom Plants

Depending on your window arrangement, your Edgewater, New Jersey bedroom likely offers lower light levels. Plants that like indirect sunlight are especially good choices and scented plants provide natural air fresheners. For your bedroom, consider:

  • Ferns. This plant thrives in indirect sun and provides a striking touch of nature. Boston ferns enjoy high humidity, which also makes them ideal for bathrooms.
  • Scented geraniums. These come in aromatic varieties with an amazing array of scents like coconut, chocolate, cinnamon and apricot. They require closer placement to windows.
  • Peace lily. This is one of the few leafy plants that sprout flowers with little sun and are extremely easy to grow.

Bathrooms Plants

Bathrooms offer an ideal environment for plants that thrive in high humidity. Besides ferns, consider:

  • Orchids. These beauties love humidity and add subtle elegance to your bathroom, especially when placed in front of a mirror. They come in an array of colors to match your décor and prefer sunnier spaces.
  • Aloe. This plant is known for its medicinal properties, but also provides a stunning display. They’re perfect for bathrooms with very low light and the humidity is often enough to keep them properly hydrated.

When placing plants around your apartment, take extra precautions if your home includes four-legged family members, especially those that like munching on leaves. Some plant varieties are actually poisonous to canines and/or felines.

Infinity Edgewater offers a unique collection of floor plans on the Hudson River with soaring ceilings that are ideal for tall indoor palms. Select homes also come with a balcony, perfect for plant lovers wanting even more growing space. Call us at (866) 801-7365 to tour our available floor plans today!

Small Dog Getting Bathed

How to Groom Your Furry Friend at Home

Small Dog Getting BathedWhen your dog gets back from the groomers, it can seem like a transformation that could only be found on a reality TV show. The fluffy fur, the adorable accessories, the drastically improved smell of your pet — it probably seems like the groomer is a magician. However, you may have more skills than you think when it comes to grooming your pet. Try these tips to save a little money while still keeping your dog looking good.

Gather Your Supplies

You’ll need to get everything together before you get started: soap, clippers, a slicker brush, and a regular comb or brush. When you’re buying supplies, talk to someone at the store about the best way to use them. Bring your dog in so they can see your dog’s coat and tell the salesperson more about your dog’s personality. They should be able to give you specific advice based on your dog’s breed or temperament. Or, talk to your dog’s original groomer and have them walk you through the full process.

Bathe Your Dog

Even if your dog’s hair is matted, you’ll want to bathe them first. Cutting out the tangles is too dangerous, so untangle your dog’s hair after you’ve washed and conditioned it. Try Earthbath or Wahl for all natural soaps that are made with long fur in mind. For everything you can’t untangle, the dog clippers should be able to take care of the rest.

Brush and Clip Their Hair

When you’re brushing their hair, try to get out as many knots as possible without pulling too hard. Your dog obviously knows you and trusts you, but their patience likely has limits. If you’re using clippers, use them slowly along your dog’s coat. Go slowly along the growth of the hair rather than against it. If you choose to go fast against the growth of the hair, it won’t necessarily hurt your dog but it also won’t look as nice.

If you’re looking for pet-friendly apartments in Edgewater for you and your four-legged friend, check out Infinity. We welcome you to take a tour of our community and our available floor plans. Give us a call today!
