Cat on the Floor

Ways to Keep Your Indoor Cat Happy

Cat on the FloorCats are curious creatures that love to play, but they can become bored very quickly. As an owner of an indoor cat, you have the tough task of preventing your furry four-legged friend from becoming bored by keeping him happy and active. Learn some of the things residents of our apartments in Edgewater can do to prevent their feline friends from becoming bored and unhappy.

Create a Cat Spa in Your Home

Cats love massages. In fact, they would probably be happy spending all day getting massaged. Keep your furry four-legged friend happy by creating a cat spa where they can go to get a self-massage.

It is extremely easy to create a cat spa in your home. Purchase a few textured cat toys, set them in a designated area in your home, and you have a cat spa where your feline friend can go for a massage at any time of the day.

Make Your Cat Work for Their Treats

If you have a cat that loves to snack no matter what, consider creating a fun food dispensing game for them. A food dispensing game allows your cat to enjoy their favorite treats but requires them to be active to get those treats. Cat owners can use cardboard boxes to create their own food dispensing game or they can purchase a toy that is created for this purpose.

Other Ways to Keep Your Indoor Cat Happy

Other suggestions for how to keep your indoor cat happy include:

  • Create a maze using cardboard boxes and other items around your home
  • Purchase interactive games where your cat can play while you are away
  • Use laser lights or ribbons to create fun games that will keep your cat active

Infinity Edgewater Kitchen

5 Kitchen Cleaning Tips for Spring

Infinity Edgewater KitchenAfter a dreary New Jersey winter, spring cleaning may be your annual tradition, or the warmer weather may simply inspire you to tackle cleaning projects you’ve been putting off. Whatever the reason, community members of our Edgewater apartments who are ready to deep clean their kitchens, check out these helpful cleaning tips.

Granite Countertops

Completely wipe down granite countertops daily with a damp cloth and a specially-formulated stone cleaner with a neutral pH for proper disinfection and protection. Polished absolute black granite countertops, however, require little in the way of spring cleaning or regular maintenance, including re-sealing.

Cleaning tip: Half water/half vinegar solutions are the go-to green cleaner for most countertop materials. However, acidic formulas can eat away at granite surfaces, so never use vinegar, ammonia or lemon cleaners.

Large Kitchen Appliances

If your stainless steel appliances have lost their shine, restore their luster. Spray surface liberally with white vinegar, then wipe it off with a very soft cloth. Alternately, use window cleaner or a product specifically made for stainless steel surfaces. Create a streak-free shine by rubbing a little mineral oil or olive oil across the surface.

Cleaning tip: Always move your cloth in one direction, cleaning and polishing with the grain.

Kitchen Sinks

Food stains and soap deposits can tarnish a sink. Sprinkle the entire basin with baking soda, then work it in using a soft sponge and a circular motion. Reach tiny recesses around faucets with a toothbrush.

Cleaning tip: Baking soda gently cleans any sink surface without scratching, including stainless steel.

Spring Clean Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets often become cluttered with containers missing lids or vice versa and broken or unused gadgets. Remove everything and discard unwanted items, then rearrange your cabinets in a logical order. Before refilling cabinets, use cleaning wipes on interiors.

Cleaning tip: Gunk loves to hide in nooks and crannies. Use a moistened soft-bristled toothbrush or cotton swab to effectively clean corners.

Grimy Floors

Scrubbing your kitchen should include rarely accessed areas, such as the floor beneath your appliances. To clean built up dirt and oil from hardwood floors, combine one cup vinegar with one gallon of water, and damp-mop thoroughly.

Cleaning tip: Vinegar has an off-putting smell. Infuse your solution with natural extracts like lavender or citrus peels to mask the odor.

Infinity Edgewater in New Jersey offers stunning stainless steel Bosch appliances, subway tile backsplash and absolute black granite countertops in our spacious kitchens. Call (866) 801-7365 to schedule a tour of our open-concept floor plans. Find your new one- or two-bedroom apartment home today!

Pig in a Blanket

3 Creative Pigs in a Blanket Recipes

Pig in a BlanketAll-American pigs in blankets are a traditional comfort food that many people believe can’t be improved on — and it’s true that the thick, doughy goodness of a classic pig in a blanket is a hard act to follow. However, creative home cooks frequently like to switch things up and place their own personal stamp on standard recipes. Following are just three delicious ways that residents of our apartments in Edgewater, NJ, can create fabulous variations of pigs in blankets in their own kitchens.

Chili Cheese Pigs in Blankets

This super easy recipe is ideal for serving on game day, as an afternoon snack for friends or loved ones, or even as a casual evening meal in its own right when served with a fresh green salad on the side. Simply mix your choice of cheese into the dough before wrapping the hot dogs in it and placing them in a casserole dish. Cover with chili, sprinkle with more cheese, and bake in a 350-degree oven for about 45 minutes or until the surface becomes bubbly.

Pizza Pigs in Blankets

Adults and kids alike love this variation of pigs in a blanket. You can use either frozen pizza dough or pizza dough that you make yourself from scratch. Roll out the dough, cut into 1/2 inch strips with a pizza cutter and then cut the strips in half lengthwise. Spread tomato sauce over the dough using a pastry brush, sprinkle with oregano and with your choice of grated cheese. Place pepperonis at the end of each strip, roll them up, put them in a baking dish, sprinkle them with more cheese, and bake at 400-degrees for about 15 minutes or until the top turns golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.

Fried Chicken in a Biscuit

Marinate chicken pieces in buttermilk and hot sauce, leaving them in the mixture overnight for best results. After preparing your favorite biscuit dough and putting it in the refrigerator to chill, fry the chicken pieces in hot oil. When they’ve cooled enough to handle, wrap the individual pieces of the chicken in biscuit dough and place them in a baking pan and bake at 375 degrees until golden brown, or about 10 minutes.

Table Setting

Tablescape Ideas for Spring Entertaining

Table SettingWhether you’re hosting a romantic dinner for two or a full-sized dinner party, the changing of the seasons is a great time to whip your table into shape. Tablescapes not only set the mood, they also get everyone excited about the fun events that are on the horizon. Here are a few ideas to customize the look you want for the best possible party.

Pick Your Colors

You may not be getting married, but it helps to have a few colors selected to make your focus. Pink and green are two classic spring colors that you really can’t go wrong with, but there are plenty of variations you can work with. Choose something in the pastel palette, and then get to work making your tablecloth, China, and glasses all match the theme.

Bring in Nature

Whether it’s a focal tree or bush sitting in the middle of the table or a flower sitting at every setting, spring tablescapes should celebrate the new life that’s exploding all around you. Wood, in particular, can add a lot of warmth and personality to even the simplest of decorating schemes.

Add Some Dimension

A stack of piled plates with a pitcher on top, a novelty teapot, and a large vase of flowers may sound as though it will make a table look cluttered. But on the contrary, it can make it look like the place to be. The more variance your table has, the more informal it will look which can encourage your guests to really bond and get to know each other.

Have Fun

Tablescapes don’t have to be replicated out of fancy books and magazines. Feel free to experiment with patterns, prints, and bold colors to your heart’s content. Just make sure to keep an objective eye when it comes to how your table comes across. Too much contrast can make people feel overwhelmed even before they sit down.

Cheese Board

How to Assemble the Ultimate Charcuterie Board

Cheese BoardOne of the cornerstones of any party is an amazing cheese and charcuterie presentation. Here are some ideas about how to assemble the ultimate charcuterie board that we hope our Infinity community members in Edgewater, New Jersey, can put to good use.

Understanding the Charcuterie Board

A charcuterie board is a lot like a cheese plate, except with meat. The word “charcuterie” comes from the French referring to most smoked, cooked or dry-cured meats. Party mainstays often include things like pâté, ham, salami, bacon and even sausages. Higher-end charcuterie boards may include items such as rillettes and galantines among others. The cured or preserved meat tradition is not uniquely French and therefore products from a wide range of cultures are fair charcuterie game.

When calculating how much product the board requires, consider allowing two ounces per guest and provide an abundance of crackers, breads and a suitable red wine.

Consider complimentary items such as fruit chutney, grapes, nuts, or an acidic food such as pickles. The idea is to create diversity in terms of texture and flavor. These are some of the charcuterie foods that tend to be hits.

  • Pork rillette: Ranked among the more well-received meats are pork rillettes. That’s because they are relatively simple to spread on small, hard breads and crackers. They are also taste bud favorites because they can be topped with a wide range of peppers, mustards and cheeses. Although they appear like an elite pâté, the tasty spread is simply pulled pork.
  • Smoked duck breast: The succulent color of a pink-cooked duck makes a rare treat that guests will remember. Duck also makes wonderful rillette if pork doesn’t work for your audience.
  • Bayonne ham: This cured meat traces its origins back to the French port and embraces traditional Basque Country flavors. Most are cured for 7-9 months and enjoy a mildly sweet taste. It makes a good foil to saltier items.

The goal is to present a blend of different flavors, textures and flavors on your charcuterie board. Other accompanying foods will help bring it all together.

A Charcuterie Board Calls for Creativity

Along with the meats, breads, and spreads, a well thought out charcuterie board requires some unexpected treats. Cheese boards incorporate fruits such as grapes, strawberries and apples as a standard way to offset the dairy. In this case, a charcuterie board calls for greater creativity.

Consider including jams, hummus, salsa, spicy and onion-based dips and spreads. When crafting a charcuterie board, keep in mind items that might go on an ingenious sandwich. This finger food is much like a tiny version.

We hope our Infinity community members enjoy these charcuterie board ideas. If you or a friend would like more information about our Edgewater apartments, call us today.

Road Trip

4 Special Scenic Drives in New Jersey

Road TripEvery now and then, a long scenic drive is good for the soul. Fortunately, New Jersey has plenty of beautiful roads, including seven that have been designated as scenic byways. Need some ideas for your next weekend drive? No problem. Here are four of New Jersey’s finest scenic drives.

Ocean Drive, From Cape May to Ocean City

Its name is definitely a clue as to what makes this road so wonderful. Ocean Drive is a very scenic road that will provide you with glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, Ocean Drive also meanders through charming towns, including Stone Harbor, and over picturesque marshes.

Route 542, Between New Gretna and Hammonton

The Pine Barrens is one of New Jersey’s best-known features. This forested area is spread over seven of the state’s counties and is said to be where a mysterious, mythological creature known as the Jersey Devil lives. Route 542 cuts through this wilderness area and is also the road on which you’ll find Batsto Village, a designated historical site that will make you wonder if you’ve somehow been transported back to the 18th century.

Route 519, Between Colesville and Rosemont

When you’re traveling down this pretty back road, it can be hard to remember that you’re in New Jersey and just a short distance from the chaos of New York City. Route 519 will take you past rural countryside, pretty farms and through small towns. Along the way, make sure to stop and stretch your legs at some of the road’s vineyards or antique stores.

Route 29, Between Washington Crossing and Frenchtown

This 34-mile ride became the state’s first Scenic Byway in 2009. And it’s easy to see why. This pretty road cuts through a number of historic riverside towns, including Lambertville, and offers drivers wonderful views of the Delaware River and the Raritan Feeder Canal.

After a pleasant day of driving, it’s nice to have a covered garage to protect your vehicle from the elements. If your current home doesn’t have one, it may be time to check out our apartments in Edgewater. Our community offers covered garage parking, plus a host of other amenities, including a state-of-the-art fitness center and a dog run. Call us to learn more!

Yoga

5 Yoga Moves for an At-Home Workout

YogaAs you relax at our Edgewater apartments, you may think that you should be outside working out or getting exercise — but you don’t really want to leave your comfortable apartment home. The good news is that you can do a great yoga workout right at home. Here are five moves to try for an at-home yoga workout.

1. Downward Dog

Start on your hands and knees, with shoulders aligned with hands and knees aligned with hips. Keep your arms into a straight position and keep your upper back relaxed. Spread your fingers out for support, and then straighten out your knees. Hold this position for three deep breaths.

2. The Crow Pose

This pose builds on the downward dog. Start with downward dog, and then inch your feet ahead until your knees are touching your arms. Bend your elbows and then slowly lift your heels up, keeping the balls of your feet in place. Take five deep breaths.

3. Mountain Pose

Stand straight with your shoulders thrown back but relaxed. Keep your feet together, making sure that you have even weight distribution. Breathe deeply while you put your arms above your head, with the palms of your hands facing inward. Imagine touching the sky with your fingers.

4. Tree Pose

Stand straight, keeping your arms at your sides. Put most of your weight on your right leg, and move the sole of your left foot up to your inner thigh. When you feel properly balanced, slowly move your hands into a prayer position in front of you. As you inhale, move your arms up over your head, reaching for the sky while you keep your palms facing inward. Hold for about 30 seconds and then repeat on the other side of your body.

5. Cat Pose

Start on your hands and knees, and then arch your spine inwards while keeping your hands and knees in the starting position. Hold for five breaths and then return to the original position.

Indoor Plants

How to Care for Your Indoor Plants

Indoor PlantsYou’ve already planned your move to our Edgewater apartments, and now you’re dreaming of ways you can furnish your new place. Plants are not only appealing, but they’re good for keeping your stress at bay. Of course, you have to take care of them, watering and tending to them so they grow and stay healthy.

If you plan on buying some indoor plants for décor, here are some tips for keeping your plants thriving.

Tips for Caring for Your Indoor Plants

1. Leave your plants where you put them. Shifting them from place to place can negatively impact their ability to adjust. If you see their leaf orientation has not changed, you know you need to let your plants settle in one spot.

2. Not all plants require lots of sunlight. If a plant has white flecks or edges on its leaves, it’s known as a variegated plant. This type does require sunlight.

3. You don’t need to use peat in compost if you prefer. Plenty of plant-soil manufacturers produce peat-free options that may contain coconut coir and other types of compost.

4. Depending on the plant you got, it might not need to be watered every single day. Some plants require watering every other day, for instance. Be sure to do your research. Overwatering a plant can kill it.

5. Keep food and drinks away from the plant. Otherwise, flies and other insects may be attracted to the plant, which could also gradually lead to the plant’s death.

6. Set up a plant tending schedule, where at around the same time each day, you water and care for your plant. This way, plant care will become a part of your daily routine, giving your plants a better chance at survival.

To-Do List

How to Get Organized for the New Year

To-Do ListNow is the perfect time to start fresh. With a bit of time and some patience, you really could get organized now. And, it is the perfect time of the year to do so. At our apartments in Edgewater, you have lots of space for storage. At the same time, you may be ready to do a bit of a purge. At Infinity Edgewater, we encourage you to do just that. But, where do you even start?

Tips for Getting a Fresh, Organized Start

With the new year comes many fresh starts. Here’s how to get some organization into your life.

#1. Choose a Single Space First

Don’t try to tackle the entire kitchen at one time. You’ll become overwhelmed quickly. Choose a single cabinet or drawer. Just look at each space as an individual area that needs attention. You’ll feel accomplished when you tackle one space.

#2: Create a Home for Everything

As you work through organizing spaces, create a specific home for each item or type of item. Instead of towels in three drawers and closets, choose just one. Make sure every type of item in your home has a specific place to be located.

#3: Create a Routine

You cannot just get organized. You have to maintain it, too. To do that, you will need to have a routine. Create a routine to address cleaning any area of your home. Write it down. This can provide you with a list of things to do each day, each week, and each month.

#4: Get Some Help

You are not in this alone. When everyone in the home is a part of the cleanup and organization, they are more likely to maintain it long term. Who can help you to get organized?

#5: Have Some Fun

Don’t make organization a chore. Turn on some music. Dance a bit. Make it enjoyable to clean and organize your space.

Ready for More Space?
